RANS BUILDER COMPLETION GALLERY

David Pfister's S-6S

After nearly 3 years of work, N606DJ took flight on the morning of October 9th. This father-son project was a Quickbuild kit Rans S-6S Coyote that has a Rotax 912S engine. It is set up for night VFR flight.

After some delay, I was able to get the final inspection done on a rainy October 8th. The weather was perfect the next morning and I was tired of doing high-speed taxis, so off I went! It had a left roll tendancy and needed some right rudder on the first flight. I also had some wavering engine guages due to a loose terminal. I was able to fix the guage problem and fly again later that day. I then started running a little warm.

I discovered that I didn't purge the cooling sytem enough and it was low on coolant. Since then I have got the roll problem taken care of by adjusting both flaps. I have been experimenting with different rudder trim devices and am going to rivet an adjustable tab on next. I have about 15 hours out of the 40 necessary for the test flight period. I hope to bring it down for a Saturday morning breakfast sometime soon!

Thanks to my father, Jerry for making this dream possible. Thanks to EAA Chapter 129 members Tom Swearingen, Reid Seibert, and my uncle Rick Smith for their technical support and encouragement. Also, thanks to my wife, Holly for letting me spend so much time in the garage!
