S-6S Coyote II: Better Than Ever!
RANS, Inc. has introduced changes to its popular S-6S Coyote II for
1999, improving performance and handling. The tail cone has been swept into a new geometry
with graceful curves to bring the tail plane eight inches lower. This has netted fuselage
drag reduction and enhanced over-the-nose visibility on taildragger versions. With an
increase in vertical fin area, the yaw stability and roll coupling has been improved. A
new nose gear disconnect device has been added to the options list and is recommended when
using wheel pants. "With the added vertical fin, keeping the ball centered is almost
a feet-on-the-floor operation," says Randy Schlitter, RANS president and CEO.
New airfoil and rib construction enhances both
performance and ease of building the wings. Using a modified Harry Riblet airfoil has
produced an improvement in cruise and a decrease in stall speed. The rib design is
identical to the highly proven method used on the certified S-7 Courier. Spars come
pre-drilled for easy rib location. Ribs build up using stampings to maintain airfoil shape
and attach to the spars.

Swing Wing Option Available for Coyote II
You've landed at a remote airport, just minutes ahead of the front; you're reluctant to
leave your pride and joy exposed. There's hanger space, but not enough to accommodate your
plane. What to do? Pull a duffel bag from the baggage compartment, snap a few struts into
place and single-handedly swing the wings back along the fuselage. Your ship is safely
tucked away when the rain and hail strike.
Wishful thinking? No. It's the new swing wing option for RANS' Coyote II. It consists of a
set of collapsible struts and hardware that fit between fuselage and wing, enabling one
person to fold the wings in a matter of minutes for compact storage. Available as a
retrofit in July, the kit includes all hardware to adapt to existing S-6S's and
ES's, as
well as a handy storage bag; it will sell for $475 US. The swing wing now is an option on
all new Coyote II kits.

Plans are afoot to swing the wing of the RANS S-7 Courier, too.
S-12S Super Airaile
Kit aircraft manufacturer RANS, Inc. has initiated flight testing of a new version of its
popular two-place S-12XL Airaile. Known as the S-12S Super Airaile, the new ship offers
greater performance as well as features and construction not available with the original
Airaile.
Major modifications to the original design include replacing pre-sewn Dacron skins with
dope-and-fabric, reducing the frontal area and lowering the thrust line. Cruise has
increased 10 MPH, with better climb rates and service ceiling.
The S-12S's dope-and-fabric skin is aerodynamically cleaner. The new wing has an improved
airfoil and the tail incorporates stamped aluminum ribs. The fully enclosed cabin is
sleeker, with a more laid-back windscreen, slimmer lines and a longer flow fence to reduce
drag. The engine was lowered one inch and the cabin height two inches; despite this, the
S-12S still accommodates 6' 6" pilots. Seats tilt over a greater range, increasing
headroom and comfort.
The S-12S retains many of the S-12XL's quick-build features, but
likely will require around two hundred hours more to complete. Like all RANS kits, the
S-12S is characterized by a high level of prefabrication; quick-build options include a
built-up and painted fuselage pod and tail boom.
The Super Airaile kit is available for a special introductory price of $27,500, including
the Rotax 912 engine and everything to complete the plane except paint, some instruments
and avionics. Depending on equipment, completion costs should run from about $2,500 to
$6,500.
