Brake line routing, main gear leg.

in S-21 TECH QUESTIONS

The text manual on page 85 details installing the brake system.

In item 1, it says the fuse should be on the main gear. It must be assumed that the bolts holding the gear on are already installed.

In item 9, it says to press the brake line into the groove in the aft side of the gear leg.

Question------do I remove the aft bolt holding the gear in place, install the brake line in the groove then replace the bolt, or does the brake line go to the outside of the bolt???

The detail for the belly fairing (figure 08-01) does not show any clearance or hole to accommodate the brake line if it is not in the gear leg groove, only an opening to allow the gear leg itself.

Guidance please.

Mike I had the same problem.

Confirmed at the 2019 flyin the brake line goes in the groove behind the bolt.

Went home, pulled out the low wing jacks.

The 7/16 bolt head on each main gear makes for a great jack point.

Remove the aft 5/16 bolt just enough to get the brake line in the groove.

Thanks Darrell, that is the only thing that makes sense to me.

I did go ahead and remove the bolts and put the lines in the gear as per your photo.

However, my brake line is at least 3" longer than the one in your photo-----I had to turn it back almost 180* and re-drill a new hole for the bulkhead fitting to get everything to fit inside the bottom fairing and clear the header tank, and aileron cable.

At this time, methinks they gave me a taildragger brake line instead of the correct shorter one for a trike.

On another note, the fuse bottom fairings appears to have been labeled wrong. I ended up switching sides, that way I could get the gear leg in the center of the fairing, and get the bend of the fuse side to match the fairing.

Once again, thanks for answering here----it seems that this forum is not getting much action. Nowhere as much as I would expect from an "official" factory site devoted to the building of these planes.

On behalf of RANS, we Apologize for not monitoring this forum as close as we should. We are blessed to be as extremely busy as we are with kit production as well as RTF production. We are going to try our best to make it a point to check the forum on a daily basis.

The brake lines are the same For trike or taildragger, if the figure drawing was used to drill the hole for the bulkhead fitting it should all work out.

Typically, when I install a gear leg, I will have the brake line right there ready to go. I will have the disc caliper and axle on the gear leg and temporarily bolt it in place, position the line where it fits best and then tamp it in the groove with a wood clock and a dead blow hammer.
