More details about the S-21 and build

in S-21 TECH QUESTIONS

I am expecting to be in a position soon to place an order for the first sub kits, or put a deposit down. Rans seems to have done a great job putting out a lot of useful information on their site. But, I'm wondering if someone could help me with answering the following:

1. What grade of aluminum are the skins and structures?

2. What corrosion protection to the aluminum parts have?

3. What corrosion protection is recommended, particularly for the aluminum? Same process as most builders do for a Vans RV, with the alumiprep and a corrosion inhibiting primer? I’m concerned about protecting my investment long term.

4. Given typical CoG, what are the actual baggage area weight limits people are seeing for the Titan engine? Same question for the 915iS, given it’s somewhat lighter?

5. Is the quoted 155 mph cruise for the Titan with a CS prop, or FP? If CS, what are people seeing for cruise down low with the WW FP prop from the FWF kit on the Titan?

6. What are the cruise speeds looking like with the 915iS?

Thanks!

Mike

Have you read through all of Randy’s S-21 newsletters? I think many of your questions have been covered here. I can hit a few from memory, but the rest are on the site in the newsletters, specifications page or elsewhere.

  1. I believe everything I have seen thus far is 6061 T6.

  2. They have none from the factory and with 6061 a good case can be made that they don’t need any. Having said that, I am priming all of my internal structure as I like the looks of primed parts and for a little extra protection.

  3. I believe the only recommendation from RANS is to prime faying surfaces and dip any rivets with dissimilar metals (steel rivets into aluminum or aluminum rivets into steel parts).

  4. Don’t know for sure. I believe 180 is advertised for the 340 and 120 for the 912.

  5. Don’t know.

  6. Not sure anything has been published given the false start with the 915 due to the ridiculous initial Rotax intake temp limit. I would expect the 340 to be faster below about 7,000 and the 915 to begin to pull away above that.
